What Is a FIFA Fan Festival?
A FIFA Fan Festival (also called an official Fan Zone or FIFA Fan Zone) is a free-to-enter outdoor venue organized by FIFA and each host city during the World Cup.
The format was established at the 2006 World Cup in Germany and perfected at subsequent tournaments. At the 2022 Qatar World Cup, the FIFA Fan Festival in Al Bidda Park drew over 1 million visitors across the tournament — more than the combined attendance of all 64 matches.
Fan Festivals are not just big-screen match viewings. They are multi-week outdoor events that combine:
- Live match screenings on large LED screens
- Entertainment stages with concerts and DJ sets
- Food and drink vendors (including alcohol, subject to local regulations — see note on Mexico below)
- Interactive football experiences and sponsor activations
- Cultural programming celebrating the host country
- Safe, family-friendly environment run by official FIFA stewards
Entry is free, though some cities may require free advance registration to manage capacity. Check each city's official fan zone page as the tournament approaches.
What to Expect Inside
The Screens
Fan Festival screens are large — typically 200–400 square meters of LED. Sound systems are stadium-grade. Watching a group stage match on one of these screens with 20,000–50,000 other fans is a legitimate atmosphere. It is loud, emotional, and genuinely fun.
The Atmosphere
Fan Festivals mix nationalities in a way that the stadiums sometimes don't. When Brazil fans are outnumbered by Argentina fans in a viewing venue, the banter is half the experience. World Cups create temporary communities — fan zones are where that happens organically.
Food and Drink
Expect a wide range of food vendors, local food stalls, and sponsor-branded bars. Alcohol is typically available at fan zones in the USA and Canada. In Mexico, rules around public alcohol consumption vary — the official fan zone in Mexico City will follow guidelines set by the city and FIFA.
What Not to Expect
Fan Festivals are crowded on big match days. Lines for food and drinks can be long. Shade is variable. In Dallas, Kansas City, and other hot-weather cities, the summer heat is a real factor — arrive early, bring water, and dress for outdoor conditions.
Bag policy rules at Fan Festivals are typically less strict than inside the stadium, but FIFA may implement security screening at entry. Travel light.

The honest answer: if you have a match ticket, use it. If you don't — or if you want to watch a match involving your team while they play in a different city — the fan zone is the right call.
Tips for Fan Zones
Arrive early. On major match days (opening match, knockout rounds, any match involving the host nation), fan zones fill up. In 2022, Qatar's fan zone was at capacity before some matches began. Arriving 60–90 minutes before kickoff is not excessive.

Groups work better with a meeting point. Fan zones are large and noisy. Agree on a fixed meeting point before you enter — somewhere easy to describe like "near the main screen on the left side." Mobile signals can be unreliable in dense crowds.

United States
New York / New Jersey
The New York metro area is hosting the Final on July 19 at MetLife Stadium. A major FIFA Fan Festival is expected in New York City — likely in a central Manhattan or waterfront location given the scale of the Final. No official location confirmed as of April 2026. Given the city's profile and the tournament's climax, this will almost certainly be the largest fan zone in the USA.

LA is one of the tournament's flagship cities and a natural fit for a major fan zone. Expected to host an official FIFA Fan Festival, likely at a central outdoor venue in the city. Los Angeles hosted the 1994 World Cup Final — fan zone planning will reflect that experience. Location TBC.
Dallas
Dallas is hosting 9 matches — the most of any host city. AT&T Stadium's plaza and surrounding Arlington areas will have significant pre-match fan activation. A separate fan festival in downtown Dallas is expected. With the volume of matches, the fan atmosphere in Dallas will be one of the most sustained of any host city.
Heat is a serious planning factor — Dallas averages 37°C in June and July. Look for shaded fan zone areas and plan hydration accordingly.

Seattle is hosting matches at Lumen Field. An official FIFA Fan Festival is expected, likely in the downtown waterfront area. Seattle's June weather is mild and relatively cool — one of the more comfortable fan zone environments among US host cities. Location TBC.
Boston
Boston is hosting matches at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough. An official FIFA Fan Festival is expected in the Boston metro area. Boston has a strong sports culture and a large international student and professional population — the fan zone will likely draw well even outside match days. Location TBC.
Kansas City
Kansas City is hosting matches at Arrowhead Stadium. An official FIFA Fan Festival is expected. Kansas City has a growing downtown entertainment district. Summer heat is a significant factor (similar to Dallas). Location TBC.
Philadelphia
Philadelphia is hosting matches at Lincoln Financial Field. An official FIFA Fan Festival is expected. Philadelphia has strong sports fan culture and a walkable downtown. The Ben Franklin Parkway (which hosted the Live Aid concert in 1985) has historically been used for large outdoor events. Location TBC.
Houston
Houston is hosting matches at NRG Stadium. An official FIFA Fan Festival is expected. Houston has a very large Latin American community and will have strong local fan engagement. Summer heat and humidity are extreme — June and July in Houston regularly exceed 35°C with high humidity. Location TBC.
Canada
Toronto
Toronto is hosting 7 matches at BMO Field. An official FIFA Fan Festival is expected. Toronto's waterfront area (Harbourfront, Ontario Place) has hosted large outdoor events and is a natural candidate. Toronto summers are warm but not extreme — comfortable outdoor conditions for most fans.

Vancouver
Vancouver is hosting matches at BC Place. An official FIFA Fan Festival is expected. Vancouver's outdoor event infrastructure is strong — the waterfront and downtown areas are well-suited. Vancouver hosted the 2010 Winter Olympics and has experience managing large international sporting events. Location TBC.
Mexico
Mexico City
Mexico City is hosting the Opening Match (Mexico vs South Africa, June 11) at Estadio Azteca — the first World Cup match ever played at Azteca. The fan zone here will be among the most significant of the tournament. A FIFA Fan Festival is expected and Mexico City's size (20+ million metro population) means the fan energy will be unlike anywhere else.
Alcohol note: Mexico City's fan zone rules around alcohol will follow Mexican law and FIFA guidelines. Fan zones at previous tournaments in Mexico have had varying alcohol policies — check official communications closer to the tournament.
Guadalajara
Guadalajara is hosting matches at Estadio Akron. An official FIFA Fan Festival is expected. Guadalajara is Mexico's second city with a strong football culture (home of Club Deportivo Guadalajara, known as Chivas). Location TBC.

Monterrey is hosting matches at Estadio BBVA. An official FIFA Fan Festival is expected. Monterrey is a major northern Mexican city with strong football tradition. Summer temperatures in Monterrey can be very high — similar to Dallas. Location TBC.
Staying Near the Fan Zone
Fan Festival locations in most cities will be in central areas — walkable from downtown hotels. Staying downtown in any host city puts you within easy reach of both the fan zone and transit to the stadium.
