Mexico City World Cup 2026 Match Day Guide
Estadio Azteca is the largest stadium in the tournament at 87,523 capacity, and it hosts the opening match of World Cup 2026 — Mexico vs South Africa on June 11. The atmosphere for a Mexico home match at the Azteca is unlike anything else in world football. This guide covers how to get there, when to arrive, what to prepare for, and how to get out.
The key difference from US venues: Mexico City has excellent public transit to the stadium. The Metro + Tren Ligero route is faster than any car on match days. Do not drive to Azteca on a match day.
Mexico City Match Schedule
Estadio Azteca hosts 5 FIFA World Cup 2026 matches. All times are Central Time (CT) — Mexico City local time.

The opening match on June 11 is the most anticipated individual fixture of the entire tournament. Expect the full 87,523 capacity, the loudest atmosphere of the group stage, and the heaviest security and crowd management operation of any match day. Plan extra time for everything.
Getting to Estadio Azteca
The Official Route — Metro + Tren Ligero
This is the fastest and most reliable option on match days. Road traffic around the stadium before and after major matches is severe — the Metro consistently beats cars and rideshare.
Step 1 — Metro Line 2 (Blue Line) to Tasqueña
- Board at any Line 2 station (runs east-west through central CDMX)
- Ride to Tasqueña — the southern terminus of Line 2
- Journey time from Roma/Condesa area: ~25 minutes
- Fare: MXN 5 (under $0.30 USD) — buy a rechargeable card at any Metro station
Step 2 — Tren Ligero Line 1 from Tasqueña to Estadio Azteca
- Exit Metro at Tasqueña and follow signs to the Tren Ligero platform
- Take Tren Ligero Line 1 southbound
- Ride 4 stops to Estadio Azteca station — exits directly at the stadium gates
- Journey time: ~15 minutes
- Fare: MXN 3 (separate from Metro fare)
Total journey (from central CDMX): 40–60 minutes, under MXN 10 ($0.50 USD). Tren Ligero routes and fares at ste.cdmx.gob.mx
On match days: Trains will be packed. Expect standing room and slow boarding at Tasqueña as crowds merge. Allow extra time. Travelling with a group? Stay together through the transfer — the Tasqueña interchange is large and can be disorienting.
Rideshare (Uber / Didi)
Uber and Didi both operate widely in Mexico City and are reliable.
Pre-match: From Roma/Condesa MXN 100–200 ($5–$10). From Polanco MXN 150–250 ($8–$13). From MEX Airport MXN 180–350 ($9–$18). These are normal-traffic estimates — match day traffic will push prices and journey times significantly higher.
Post-match: Do not rely on rideshare for the return journey after a sold-out match. The area around Azteca becomes gridlocked immediately after the final whistle. Request times routinely reach 30+ minutes. The Tren Ligero is faster. If you insist on rideshare, walk 15–20 minutes away from the stadium before opening the app.
Driving
Do not drive to Estadio Azteca on a match day. The surrounding road network — Calzada de Tlalpan and Periférico — becomes impassable after full-capacity events. Parking is limited and expensive. If you are renting a car in Mexico City for the rest of your trip, leave it at your hotel on match days.
From MEX Airport (Benito Juárez International)
MEX is approximately 13 km from Estadio Azteca.
- Metro: Line 5 from Terminal 1 (or Line 1 from Terminal 2) → transfer to Line 2 at Centro Médico → ride to Tasqueña → Tren Ligero to Azteca. Total: 50–70 minutes, under MXN 10.
- Rideshare: MXN 180–350 ($9–$18), 30–50 minutes outside match hours. Match day: longer.
From AIFA (Felipe Ángeles International Airport)
AIFA is 50 km north of the city. Allow at least 90 minutes to reach the stadium area by ground transport. AIFA transport connections at aifa.aeropuertos.gob.mx
Arrival & Security
Gates open: Typically 2.5–3 hours before kickoff for major matches — confirm on your ticket or at the official Estadio Azteca site.
Arrival guide by match:
| Match | Arrive by | Why | |-------|-----------|-----| | Mexico vs South Africa (Jun 11) | 3 hours early | Opening match, 87,523 capacity, maximum security | | Other group stage matches | 90 min early | Standard crowd management | | Round of 32 / Round of 16 | 2 hours early | Knockout intensity, larger security operation |
Bag policy: FIFA's clear bag policy applies. Allowed:
- Clear plastic tote up to 12" × 6" × 12" (30 × 15 × 30 cm)
- One-gallon clear resealable bag
- Small non-clear clutch up to 4.5" × 6.5"
See the full stadium bag policy guide for details. Buy a compliant bag at any Walmart, Liverpool, or Chedraui in Mexico City before match day if needed.
Weather at Estadio Azteca
June and July in Mexico City bring the rainy season. Expect warm afternoons (22–25°C / 72–77°F) with a high probability of afternoon or evening thunderstorms. Estadio Azteca has a partial roof — stands are partially covered but not fully enclosed. Rain gear is worth bringing regardless of the morning forecast.
Evening matches (20:00, 21:00 CT): Temperatures drop to 16–19°C (61–66°F) after sunset at altitude. A light layer is worth having, especially if seats are uncovered.
Altitude: Mexico City sits at 2,240 metres (7,349 feet) above sea level. If you have arrived recently:
- Drink significantly more water than usual — dehydration accelerates at altitude
- Avoid heavy alcohol consumption on match day, especially if you arrived within 24 hours
- Physical exertion (including climbing stadium stairs) may feel harder than expected for the first 1–2 days
- Symptoms like mild headache or fatigue are common and typically pass within 48 hours
Inside Estadio Azteca
Capacity: 87,523 — the largest stadium in the tournament.
The history: Azteca hosted the 1970 and 1986 World Cup finals. It witnessed Maradona's Hand of God and Goal of the Century in 1986. This is the most storied stadium in the sport. For those who know football history, simply being inside it is significant.
The roof: Partial coverage. Upper tiers and some lower sections are exposed — check your seat location and bring rain gear accordingly.
Food and drink: Mexican stadium food includes tacos, tortas, elotes (corn), and churros alongside standard drinks. Prices are higher inside than on the street but far below US stadium pricing. Cash (MXN) and cards are accepted — carry some cash for smaller vendors.
Language: Stadium announcements and signage are primarily in Spanish. FIFA multilingual support is available at designated fan information points.
After the Match
Tren Ligero from Estadio Azteca station is the right exit option. Trains run frequently post-match and the platforms are large enough to absorb the crowds over 30–40 minutes. You will queue — but the queue moves.
Staying nearby after the match: The Coyoacán neighborhood is 5–7 km from Azteca and comes alive on match nights. Mezcal bars, taco stands, and late-night food are easy to find. Rideshare from Azteca to Coyoacán after a 20-minute wait is MXN 60–100 ($3–$5).
Ticket touts and scams: The area around Azteca on match days attracts street sellers, unlicensed ticket sellers, and scammers targeting tourists. Hold your bag in front of you, do not stop for unsolicited approaches, and use the Metro rather than hailing taxis on the street. Use Uber or Didi for all rideshare.

Why insurance matters for Mexico City specifically: Medical care quality varies and can be expensive for tourists without coverage. Altitude-related illness, stomach bugs from street food, and the general unpredictability of international travel make a policy worth having. Costs are far lower than a single clinic visit in Mexico as a foreign national. Compare plans →
