Monterrey World Cup 2026 Match Day Guide

Estadio BBVA in Guadalupe, Monterrey hosts 4 matches — including Tunisia vs Japan on June 19, South Africa vs South Korea on June 24, and a Round of 32 on June 29. Monterrey is Mexico's third-largest city and an industrial capital close to the US border — approximately 3 hours from San Antonio, making it accessible for US-based fans considering a cross-border trip.

The key logistics fact: Estadio BBVA is in Guadalupe, east of central Monterrey. The primary transport to the stadium is rideshare (Uber operates in Monterrey) or taxi from registered stands. Monterrey summers are extreme — average highs of 37–40°C (99–104°F). Plan all outdoor activity around the hottest part of the day.

Tunisia vs Japan (Jun 19) has a late 23:00 CT kickoff — a night match in Mexico, with the stadium atmosphere at its best. Japan's fan organization and travelling support is exceptional and will be visible even at this venue. The Round of 32 (Jun 29) extends Monterrey's hosting into the knockout stages.

Note on June 14 match: TBD vs Tunisia has already been played. The June 14 match slot opponent (Group F) will have been confirmed by this point.

Getting to Estadio BBVA

Estadio BBVA is at Av. Pablo Livas 2011, Guadalupe, Nuevo León, Mexico — in Guadalupe municipality, approximately 12 km east of central Monterrey (Macroplaza area).

Option 1 — Uber / Rideshare (Recommended)

Uber operates in Monterrey and is the safest and most reliable option for international visitors.

From central Monterrey (Macroplaza / Barrio Antiguo area):

  • Approximately 20–30 minutes, MXN $100–160 (~$5–9 USD) in normal traffic
  • Match days: add 15–30 minutes, surge pricing possible after the final whistle

From the Monterrey hotel zone (San Pedro Garza García):

  • Approximately 25–35 minutes, MXN $140–200 (~$7–11 USD) in normal traffic

Post-match: For 23:00 CT finishes, Uber demand will be high at midnight. Request before full-time or allow 20 minutes post-whistle before the surge peaks. The designated taxi stands outside the stadium offer an alternative with direct negotiation for prices.

Option 2 — Metro (Limited)

Monterrey has a metro system (Metrorrey) — Line 1 and Line 2 — but there is no direct metro stop adjacent to Estadio BBVA. Line 1 runs through central Monterrey east toward Guadalupe; the closest stop requires a 20–30 minute walk or taxi to the stadium.

For fans staying centrally, Metro + taxi to the stadium is an option but not recommended for post-midnight returns after the 23:00 match.

Full metro information at metrorrey.gob.mx

Option 3 — Taxi (Sitios)

Use registered sitio taxis — from hotel stands or designated taxi zones. Do not hail street taxis in Monterrey. Use Uber, hotel taxis, or official taxi ranks. This is standard safety advice for Mexico.

Arrival Times by Match

| Match | Arrive by | Notes | |-------|-----------|-------| | Tunisia vs Japan (Jun 19, 23:00 CT) | 2 hours early (21:00) | Late night match — be in position before 23:00 | | South Africa vs South Korea (Jun 24) | 2 hours early | Evening match, multi-fanbase crowd | | Round of 32 (Jun 29) | 2 hours early | Knockout intensity, 20:00 evening |

Gates open: Typically 2.5–3 hours before kickoff — confirm on your ticket.

Weather at Estadio BBVA

Monterrey summers are extreme — among the hottest of any World Cup 2026 host city.

  • Temperature: 37–40°C (99–104°F) during the day. Even at 21:00–23:00 CT, evening temperatures remain 28–32°C (82–90°F).
  • Humidity: Moderate, but combined with extreme heat, the late evening conditions are still demanding.
  • Rain: Monterrey can have intense summer storms — brief but heavy. Estadio BBVA has roof coverage over most seating areas — this is a major comfort advantage over open stadiums.
  • Heat advisory: Even evening matches (21:00, 23:00) will be warm. Wear lightweight clothing, hydrate heavily before arrival, and bring a refillable water bottle.

Bag Policy

Estadio BBVA will follow FIFA's World Cup bag policy. Based on FIFA events:

  • Clear or mesh bag up to approximately 30cm × 30cm
  • Small non-clear clutch or purse

Verify the confirmed policy at FIFA.com before your match. See also the full bag policy guide.

Inside Estadio BBVA

Capacity: 53,460 — home of CF Monterrey (Rayados) and Club de Fútbol Monterrey (Tigres UANL), two of Mexico's most successful clubs. The stadium opened in 2015 and is one of the most modern in Latin America.

The atmosphere: Estadio BBVA is known for its noise — a modern bowl designed to concentrate crowd sound. For Japan and South Korean fans (who bring organised supporter culture), the atmosphere at these late-evening matches will be exceptional. Tunisia also has passionate support that travels.

Alcohol: Subject to FIFA and Mexican regulations at this venue. Check official communications from FIFA as the tournament progresses.

Safety in Monterrey

Monterrey is a major international business city and receives significant foreign visitor traffic. Standard precautions for Mexico apply:

  • Use Uber or hotel/registered taxis — no street hailing
  • Stay in the tourist and business districts (San Pedro Garza García, Barrio Antiguo, Cintermex area)
  • Evening match days (21:00–midnight) are managed city events — the tournament environment involves elevated police and security presence
  • US State Department advisory for Nuevo León state: check travel.state.gov for the current advisory before travelling

After the Match

Late night logistics: Tunisia vs Japan ends around 01:00 CT. Pre-plan your return transport — book Uber in advance if possible or identify the official taxi stand location at the stadium exit.

Post-match areas:

  • Barrio Antiguo (Historic District): 25–30 minutes from the stadium. Monterrey's best bar and restaurant area, open late. The right post-match destination for most fans.
  • San Pedro Garza García: 30–35 minutes by rideshare. Upscale municipality with international restaurants, hotel bars, and a safer late-night environment.
  • Macroplaza: 25 minutes from the stadium. The main central plaza — open-air, visible landmark, good meeting point.

Why insurance matters for Monterrey: International visitors in Mexico pay out of pocket for medical care. Monterrey's extreme heat creates genuine risk of heat-related illness even at evening matches. Private hospital care in Monterrey is available and good, but costs reach $5,000–$15,000 USD without coverage. A travel medical policy covering Mexico is essential. Compare plans →

Nearest hospitals to Estadio BBVA:

  • Hospital Christus Muguerza Alta Especialidad — Av. Hidalgo 2525 Sur, Monterrey (~6 miles northwest)

Both are private hospitals recommended for international visitors.

Crossing from the US

Monterrey is approximately 3 hours south of Laredo, TX and 4 hours from San Antonio. If crossing by car:

  • Border crossing: Laredo/Nuevo Laredo is the main crossing point on I-35. Expect 1–3 hour waits at the bridge during peak periods (weekends, tournament dates).
  • Vehicle insurance: Mexican law requires a separate Mexican auto insurance policy — US policies do not cover driving in Mexico. Purchase before crossing. Sanborn's Mexico Insurance is one established provider.
  • Driving advisory: Drive only during daylight hours on Mexican highways. Use toll roads (cuotas) rather than free roads (libres). Do not drive to Mexico without researching the specific route.
